About the organisation
National Historical Museums in Sweden (SHMM) is a public museums agency which administers cultural heritage and provides perspectives on our existence in order to strengthen the democratic development of society. We are currently working on changing and improving our operations with a view to becoming the best museums of cultural history in the Nordic region.
The SHMM comprises the Museum of National Antiquities (SHM) and the Royal Coin Cabinet - the Swedish National Museum of Economy (KMK). The agency also runs the museum operations at Tumba Papermill Museum (TBM). The Swedish name for SHM, Statens historiska museum, is often shortened to just Historiska museet, and it is under this name that the museum is marketed to the Swedish public.
The SHMM is led by a superintendent who, at the same time, is director of the Museum of National Antiquities. The superintendent is appointed by the government for a period of six years. The Royal Coin Cabinet has its own museum director, who is appointed by the agency. Around 60 full-time staff work at the agency.
